Started in 1769, the canal starts from Oxford and ends at Hawesbury Junction. The section between Braunston Turn and Napton Junction also forms part of the Grand Union Canal, or rather it was intended to be, with the Oxford Canal company recieving tolls for its use. The canal section south of Napton Junction is not covered by this guide.
Passing along the edges of Coventry and Rugby, this canal has 4 locks and one tunnel (useable for canoes). Making this a very rural canal. With the exception of the bit by the Rugby cement works.
There are several short canal branches or Arms. These were the result of canal improvements or acted as canal feeders. By looking at Google and the Ordnance Survey mapping extracts, the course of the old canal route can still be seen in places.
